Very Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Impressed "J P S," attributed to John P. Schermerhorn, Richmond, VA, circa 1825, semi-ovoid jar with inwardly tapering shoulder and flattened rim, decorated around the shoulder with a cobalt swag design, and at the midsction with a large cobalt pinwheel motif. Impressed on underside with the initials "J P S". According to Russ and Schermerhorn, in their article, "Rockett's Red Glare," from Ceramics in America, 2005, jars of this type are Richmond products of Schermerhorn that reflect his training in Old Bridge, New Jersey. See p, 88 of Ceramics in America, 2005 for a similar example. Rim and base chips. Height 10 3/4".
