Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C.," circa 1830, ovoid jar with rounded rim, tab handles, and incised shoulder lines, decorated on the front with a large sweeping floral motif. Reverse of jar and underside of one handle decorated with leaf-like brushwork. Handle terminals brushed with cobalt. Excellent color for Smith stoneware. A fine example of this desirable Alexandria merchant mark. Base and handle chips. Height 9 1/2".
