Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Outstanding Cobalt Ship Scene, Northeastern U.S. origin, circa 1850, decorated with a detailed cobalt sailing ship with numerous sails and flag placed atop a brushed cobalt band of water. To the ship's right a detailed lighthouse with surrounding fence, windows, and flag. To the ship's left, a group of rocks. A skillfully-painted and elaborate design. Ship decorations on stoneware are considered rare. Lighthouse designs are nearly unheard of. Capacity mark highlighted in cobalt. Top of handle decorated with cobalt dash. Base of handle decorated with a stylized flowerhead. Inch-long flake on front by back of boat. Crack around circumference of jug with a few flakes of clay missing by cobalt rocks. Connects to another sealed crack extending towards spout. Small stone ping on front. Line in underside, continuing a few inches up front of jug. Small base chip. Height 13".
