Phenomenal Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher with Ornate Handle, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO," circa 1860, ovoid pitcher with tooled collar and vibrant cobalt decoration applied over whitish, slip-washed clay. Pitcher is decorated with two very large dotted tulips with leaves hanging at the waist and another flower at the center. Collar decorated with cobalt swags and rim decorated with a series of cobalt dashes. Handle with two applied grips and thumbrest, decorated with a cobalt leaf on the top and large leaves extending from the handle"s base. Impressed "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO / 2" on the collar. An exceptional example of Shenandoah Valley or Pennsylvania stoneware in terms of form, decoration, and color. Made by one of America"s most-admired potters. Thin crack on underside, extending up reverse of pitcher 6 1/2". Wear to spout. Height 13 1/2".
