Very Rare Miniature Stoneware Jar or Flowerpot with Cobalt Decoration, probably Western PA, circa 1880, straight-sided vessel with pronounced foot and crimped rim, decorated with a series of cobalt dots around the shoulder, a thick cobalt band at the base, and cobalt brushwork on the top and bottom of the rim. This piece also has what appears to be a hand-modeled pottery slug with two antennae applied to the interior base. The slug is greenish-black in color and highly-glossy, likely made with a large amount of salt. The clay color and base treatment of this miniature suggest a Western Pennsylvania origin. Highly unusual form and size. Tiny rim chip with very faint crack extending downward 1 3/4". Height 2 1/2".
