Very Rare, Early Stoneware Jar with Open Handles and Cobalt and Manganese Decoration, New Jersey origin, late 18th century, four-gallon ovoid jar with very large open handles, decorated on the front and back with a large cobalt floral design with manganese highlights. Cobalt floral designs also under each handle, with one design also highlighted in manganese. Cobalt "4" painted on one side, cobalt lines at rim and base, and cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A magnificently formed and decorated example of early New Jersey stoneware. 4 1/2" crack from rim on back of jar. Also a 4 1/2" tall T-shaped crack below one handle, with top of "T" measuring 8". Numerous small base chips. In-the-making separations at terminals on one handle. 2" x 3/4" flake off of reverse, which occurred in the making. Height 14".
