Rare and Exceptional Stoneware Jar with Slip Cup and Brush Applied Plant Decoration, Stamped "S. BELL," attributed to Samuel Bell, Winchester or Strasburg, VA, circa 1840, ovoid one-gallon jar with tall collar and lug handles, decorated front and back with an unusual design of a plant with curled stems and dotted decoration. Leaves and stems of plant applied with a brush, and dot decoration accomplished with a slip cup, which is an unusual treatment. Handle terminals also decorated. Impressed with rare "S. BELL" maker"s mark near the top of the jar, along with a one-gallon capacity mark. Signed Samuel Bell stoneware is considered some of the rarest and most desirable of all stoneware produced in the Shenandoah Valley. Excellent condition with a few rim chips and T-shaped line at base. Height 9 5/8".
