Rare Salesman"s Sample Stoneware Jug with Decoration, Upstate New York Origin, circa 1840, miniature ovoid jug decorated on the front with a finely executed flower with dotted center. To the left of the decoration is a cobalt script "2" (which would ordinarily represent two gallons). Small vessels such as this marked with obviously incorrect capacities are usually attributed as salesman"s samples, miniature versions of regular-sized pieces, which were offered to merchants as examples of what a pottery produced. An extremely unusual size. Mint condition. Height 3 5/8".
