Exceedingly Rare and Important, Glazed Redware Bird on Plinth, Stamped Twice "BAECHER / WINCHESTER VA," circa 1880, dove-like bird with applied and detailed wings, applied eyes, and carved tail. Seated atop an oval clay plinth with scored edge. Bird and base covered in a colorful cream and mottled brown glaze. Impressed twice on top surface of plinth "BAECHER / WINCHESTER VA." An exceptional example of Shenandoah Valley figural redware, with desirable size, color, and condition, and including the maker"s signature. Perhaps one of the finest examples of hand-modeled Baecher pottery known. Remarkable condition, with repair to tip of bill and minor glaze loss. Length from tip of bill to tail 6 1/4".
